Research study on immigration enforcement featured on NSF site
An NSF-funded study, Local Policing in the Context of Immigration: Further Explorations Using a Mixed Methods Approach, is highlighted on the NSF's SEE Innovation website.
Although the federal government leads immigration policies and enforcement, the study found that local enforcement efforts varied.
The interdisciplinary research team leading the project included Doris Provine, professor emerita in the School of Justice and Social Inquiry, Scott Decker, Foundation Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Paul Lewis, associate professor in the School of Politics and Global Studies at ASU, and Monica Varsanyi, associate professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York.
The team interviewed police chiefs and sheriffs regarding the development of local-level immigration policy and enforcement practices. Results from the study have been presented to the National League of Cities, state and local police officer standards and training councils, and to academic audiences.
