Ray Krone lecture, Nov. 20
Exonerated: Ray Krone from death row to free man
Thursday, Nov. 20
5-6:30 p.m.
AE England Building
424 N. Central Ave.
Arizona postal worker Ray Krone was sentenced to death for murdering a female bartender in 1991 primarily on the testimony of a bite mark expert. A procedural error caused the first verdict to be thrown out, but a second trial resulted in another guilty verdict but this time Ray was sentenced to life in prison. Ray maintained his innocence. After serving over 10 years in prison, additional DNA testing proved not only that Ray was not the killer but it pointed to the actual killer. Ray was later exonerated. Since his exoneration in 2002, Ray has worked with a group called Witness to Innocence, telling his story and speaking out at against the death penalty. Juror Joe Hedgecock is also speaking out about his experience as one of the jurors that convicted Ray. Both give a chilling account of their experiences with the criminal justice system.
Cosponsors of the event include the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, The Justice Project and Death Penalty Alternatives for Arizona.
