Twitter: The new face of crime
Social media is increasingly a place where those who commit crime post their exploits. A front page story that ran in USA Today profiled research on gangs and social media from Scott Decker, director and foundation professor in ASU's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Decker told USA Today that social media is replacing the role of graffiti or taunting.
"Now the kind of things that result in fighting take place online," Decker said, "Challenges to manhood, challenges to how tough the gang is. It could be YouTube videos, posting on someone's Facebook site."
Decker's article, titled "From 'What the f#@% is a Facebook?' to 'Who doesn't use Facebook?': The role of criminal lifestyles in the adoption and use of the Internet" is scheduled to be published in the November 2013 edition of the journal Social Science Research.
