Faculty associate's retirement marks beginning of chief position

After more than 20 years of service, commander Robert Handy made his retirement official this week at Desert West Park in Phoenix.

A faculty associate in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Handy recently was appointed Chief of Police for the City of San Bernardino, Calif.

Handy began his law enforcement career with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. In 1990, he joined the City of Phoenix Police Department, working his way through the ranks to commander, earning numerous awards for his outstanding performance in the department and community, including twice receiving the Medal of Valor and twice receiving the City of Phoenix Excellence Award.

“I am going to miss many people here in Phoenix, but I am very excited about the opportunities in San Bernardino," Handy said. "The City of San Bernardino Police Department has a great reputation, and I am honored to have been chosen to serve as their police chief."

Handy’s faculty associate position at Arizona State University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice began in 1997. He quickly became a favorite among criminal justice students, faculty and staff. 

“The school is proud of Rob’s new appointment, and we look forward to maintaining our 14-year friendship,” said Scott Decker, director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.  “We wish him all the best in this new endeavor. We will miss his work with our students but are pleased for his chance to lead the San Bernardino Police Department to serve the residents of their community.”
