Family Engagement
Overview
Family engagement is critical in juvenile probation. These two projects offer a 360° view by capturing insights from both probation staff and youth and families. The projects help jurisdictions identify strengths, pinpoint growth areas, and drive improvements.
Part 1: Insights from Juvenile Probation Staff
- Goals: Learn what juvenile probation staff think and experience regarding family engagement in their department.
- Approach: Staff complete a 15-minute, anonymous, online, multiple-choice survey assessing their perceptions of family engagement in the department.
- Recruitment: ASU asks probation leadership to send our flyer and email to staff. Staff then complete the survey on their phones, computers, or tablets.
- Generate Actionable Insights: ASU provides an online dashboard to visualize and
contextualize results against other anonymous jurisdictions across the nation, as well
as changes over time.
Part 2: Empowering Family Voice: Insights from Youth and Families
- Goals: Understand youth and family experiences during probation and youth outcomes after probation to: a) assess probation’s impact; and b) support family-engaged case planning and management.
- Approach: Families complete short online surveys to assess experiences during probation and outcomes after probation. Every participant will get a gift card, and all responses are private and confidential. ASU combines everyone’s answers to show overall patterns. No identifying information will ever be shared with the probation department.
Recruitment: Probation provides a contact list each month, and ASU handles all
outreach, data collection, and visualization.
