Faculty associate teaches police officers in the United Arab Emirates

Jeff Hynes is teaching this summer. Not at the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice where the former Phoenix Police commander is a longtime faculty associate. And not at Glendale Community College where he instructs students full-time. Hynes is in Abu Dhabi, a city in the United Arab Emirates. His students are police officers from that country.

“This is an amazing academic adventure,” says Hynes. “Law enforcement practices are very similar globally.”

He is halfway through five weeks of instruction. A nationally recognized expert in proactive problem solving, Hynes has focused his classes on creative problem solving, total quality management, and administrative excellence, which includes lessons on strategic planning and leadership.

Hynes spent 32-years with the Phoenix Police Department, the last seven as a commander. He oversaw 450 officers as the leader of the Desert Horizon and Black Mountain Precincts, and previously headed the professional standards and family investigation bureaus. Hynes is a certified public manager with a doctoral degree in educational leadership.

He’s taught more than a dozen different classes as a faculty associate with the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, including CRJ 314 Innovations in Policing and CRJ 315 Police Organization and Management.
