ProMod Prisons: Getting out and staying out

A group of 9 freshmen students were involved in a project-based, modular learning course that was designed around the driving question: Why are recidivism rates so high?

Challenge:

The current recidivism rate in the state of Arizona is approximately 50%. Students spent the first semester identifying the factors that lead individuals to end up back in prison (i.e. to recidivate).

This is a challenge that faces our criminal justice system because it is expensive to incarcerate someone and it's indicative that rehabilitation efforts could be improved. 95% of those incarcerated are eventually released back into society, so it is important that they are becoming contributing members of their communities.

Solution:

The solution that these students came up with was an art show and auction. They felt that it was important to raise awareness about prison programming, showcase the talent and humanity that lies within the walls of a prison, and raise money for underserved youth. Using donated art that was created within the walls of a prison, the students curated the show that was held on May 5th, 2017. All proceeds from this sold-out event were donated to Children First Leadership Academy and Pinal County Family Advocacy Center.
