Certificate in Correctional Studies
The certificate in correctional studies educates students about a variety of components that make up the corrections system.
It is designed to provide students with understanding and knowledge of the histories, philosophies and contemporary practices of both institutional and community corrections. The program emphasizes evidence-based best practices concerning the rehabilitation of correctional clients to reduce recidivism.
It is an 15 credit hour undergraduate certificate to supplement a bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice or related study.
Core Courses (9 credit hours): Intro to Corrections; Community Corrections; Institutional Corrections
Elective Courses (6 credit hours): Law and Social Control; Special Topics (only those relevant to corrections); Victims and the Criminal Justice System; Sex Crimes; Legal Issues in Corrections; Drugs of Abuse; Crime and Forensic Mental Health; Tools for Engaging Correctional Populations; Discretionary Justice; Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program; Internship (only those relevant to corrections)
