Dr. Bernat's research has been focused on the criminal law, its policy and application. This scholarship has been largely directed at understanding essential questions that pertain to our constitutional form of government and crime. Dr. Bernat's recent research includes the study of crime and the fear of crime among elder populations, the nature and extent of crime committed by youth, the degree to which social service programs can reduce recidivism among youthful offenders. In 1998 Dr. Bernat received the following awards: Arizona State Governor's Spirit of Excellence Award; a semi-finalist award for Innovations in American Government from the Ford Foundation and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; the ASU President's Medal for Team Excellence and the 2005-2006 Faculty Achievement Award from ASU.
